Tool Room Manager

Job Title: Tool Room Manager
Reports To: VP Engineering & Technology
FLSA Status: Exempt
Direct Reports: Yes

Position Summary:

Run day to day operations in tool room in a low/medium volume, high changeover environment with Thermoplastic, LSR and Thermoset manufacturing in Medical Device, Aerospace, and Light Industrial.

Essential Functions/Responsibilities:

  • Manage tool room team that is responsible for:
    • Creating and executing work orders ERP System for production tools.
    • Mold configuration changeovers.
    • Preventative maintenance.
    • Repairs
    • Trouble shooting tooling, hot runners, cold decks, etc.
  • Identify and Work with outside suppliers.
  • Develop/Implement Beacon Tooling Standards.
  • Specifying new molds for Thermoplastics, Liquid Silicone Rubber, Thermoset Transfer/Compression molding.
  • Setting up and driving tool design reviews with suppliers and customers.
  • Track and communicate progress of tool build.
  • Develop and Drive (First Off Tool) FOT and FAT (Factory Acceptance Test) processes with all external tool builds.
  • Own the mold approval process.
  • Own the SAT (Site Acceptance Test) and Mold IQ Processes when tool arrives.
  • Work with customers as Tooling and DFM expert to drive good designs.

     Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:

    • Proven leadership and project management skills
    • Fabrication methods (Milling, Grinding, Sinker EDM, Wire EDM, Turning).
    • Repair methods (Welding, Grinding, plating, hand work).
    • Tool Steels.
    • The injection molding process, decoupled molding, RJG basics.
    • Hot Runner design, operation, troubleshooting.
    • Cold Deck design, operation, troubleshooting.
    • Mold classifications (101-105).
    • Prototyping strategies/methods.
    • Strong SolidWorks skills
    • Strong computer skills (Excel, Outlook, ERP System).
    • Strong communication and organizational skills.

     Education and Experience:

    • 10-20 Years in Injection Mold Building Environment
    • 5 Years management experience
